Is it possible to drive across the US while avoiding toll roads?

Toll roads are common around some big cities, and can be hard to avoid.

But in general, toll roads are relatively few and far between. It is very different from say driving in France, where you can’t really make progress and avoid tolls at the same time.

It depends a lot on the details of where you are going.

I have driven in a lot of states, but not across from one side to the other as one trip. Last trip I did was from Dallas, Texas to Meridian, Mississippi, via Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas - then back through Louisiana. The whole trip was about 3000 miles in two weeks. I did not take any toll roads - I used my Google Maps app and set it to “avoid toll roads”. The time before that when I visited the US, in 2017, I went to Philadelphia, and there I drove on some toll roads. I think the only time before that that I’ve been on toll roads was in 2002, in Dallas, and there I took toll roads for convenience. Maybe I had to use some toll roads in California in 2014, I can’t quite recall - I try to avoid it, but sometimes it’s just unpractical.
